Adeniyi Adeyemi Adelakun, better known as rapper Niyi, studied at Central Saint Martins until he dropped out after being signed to Tummy Touch Records. He went on to run seminal club nights, even giving Lady Gaga her first UK show, and performed with Will.I.am during his tour in London. Niyi also organised 16-18 warehouse parties, which were the first of their kind in the UK. After the police shut down his biggest production on New Year’s Eve, he decided to set his sights on academia. Completing his A-Levels in nine months and studying for his undergraduate degree in Education and English Literature at Cambridge University, Niyi stayed on to complete an MPhil in Children’s Literature concentrating on children’s television and black masculinity, with his PhD to continue exploring the subject in greater depth.
